MAH was invited to the 60th Annual Cherry Blossom, Festival Ball on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Festival Ball – themed, “Kizuna” or to “bond”, was held at the beautiful Hawaii Theater located in the heart of O’ahu’s historic Chinatown. Queen Shay and I were lucky to attend this year’s pageant.
Boom boom, boom boom. The pageant started with a taiko performance by the queen contestants. It was amazing to watch and sounded like a heart beating together as one. It truly inspired me to look into taiko drum lessons to learn more about my Japanese Culture.
The Cherry Blossom pageant is unique in the fact that they show case the queen contestants in both Western and Eastern style gowns. the 15 queen contestants walked out in very beautiful Kimonos and each was very different.
Finally the new Queen and her court were crowned. おめでとうございます to Queen Erin Mie Hi’ileialoha Morimoto and her court. Remember to enjoy the journey. I look forward to seeing the Erin and her court and events in the community.
You can bet I took lots of pictures enjoy! Shay and I took pictures with visiting Cherry Blossom Queens (from Seattle, LA, and San Francisco), Narcissus Queen Tiffany Au, Miss Chinatown Nicky Leong and Miss Hawaii Chinese Tina Ng, Honolulu Mayor’s Wife Judy Carlisle, Chinese Chamber President John Hui, 2011 Cherry Blossom Court, and new and old friends.
